Battery Pack Application Design Engineer

The Battery Pack Application Design Engineer, will drive growth through successful qualification of existing and new PPG materials and solutions for Li Ion Battery Assembly, with a focus on electric vehicles market. The Battery Assembly Application Engineering/Technical Service (AETS) will be a primary technical resource supporting PPG products and solutions aligned to the Li Ion battery assembly process for specific customers.  Working in conjunction with the BDM/sales team as the key technical advisor and product advocate, the AETS must be able to combine a deep understanding of customers processes, identify and provide reliable PPG solutions (cross SBU) to support the customer, and support the customer engagement and sales process through relationship building, evaluation, qualification, start-up, and ongoing service.  AETS will remain strongly linked externally to customers and internally to commercial and product development throughout the sales cycle.

Troy, MI is the main Corporate office and primary location for business interactions.

Key Deliverables:
  • Successful customer trials and product/solution qualifications

  • Deep understanding of Li Ion battery assembly processes at specific customers, including equipment, materials, labor, cycles times

  • Customer application specific issues, requirements definition, specifications, and unmet needs

  • Competitive materials and existing performance and value comparison

  • Prioritization and translation of customer process, competitive product performance, and customer overall needs into a framework for a differentiated value proposition

  • Opportunity definition and prioritization for trials

  • Team member supporting successful scoping and delivery of development projects

  • Ongoing technical service of products sold to battery assembly customers

  • Maintain expert level of application knowledge – understanding customers processes and aligned PPG products

  • Travel to customer sites to perform start-up, integration, and training services

  • Provide design and specification development support to consultants, integrators, and distributors.

  • Connect to product development in defined product  categories to understand critical performance features; quickly learn and understand multiple products relevant to Li Ion battery assembly

  • Connect to and collaborate with AETS for other regions to support overall success

  • Respond to functional and technical elements of RFIs/RFPs in support of product qualification

  • Listen, understand and convey customer requirements.

  • Support application understanding for product development, BDM, sales, and marketing

  • Assist in the design and development of new products and tools necessary to make target accounts successful at utilizing PPG products and solutions

  • Maintain accurate records of target accounts, opportunities, quotes, projects, contacts and correspondence in company approved databases

  • Support technical aspects of entire sales process

  • Resolve customer issues or difficulties in a manner that is consistent with the company mission, values, and financial objectives

  • Maintain professional business relationships within target accounts.

  • Provide status of ongoing projects and future projects.

  • BA/BS in Engineering (chemical, industrial, mechanical) or related (Chemistry, Materials Science)

  • Experience 3–5 Years in Process Engineering or Application Engineering roles

  • Demonstrated direct customer interface experience in technical role (product development, technical service, engineering support, etc.)

  • Successful track record of supporting coatings, adhesives, sealants or related products into the Li Ion battery industry or electronics industry

  • Successful track record of team participation in a role supporting new product design/development and commercialization

  • Demonstrated success working in multi-functional team environment

  • Demonstrated analytical , oral and written communication skills

  • Proficient in MS Office package
  • 10 years+ total experience in chemical products or automotive industries

  • Experience working in chemical products sector doing field qualification and application engineering

  • International business experience and high level alignment with global product strategies

  • Experienced traveler (between 25-50% travel expected in this role)

  • Authored external presentations, papers, other

  • Participation in industry collaborative groups/consortia
