The Development Chemist is responsible for the innovation of improved and new products using GSM & Sigma Logic tools.  You will be tasked with supporting plant investigations and customer concerns.  Key responsibilities will be support of new color launches at all plants, as well as, support of new technology and model launches at two new FCA plants.

 

The Development Chemist will have the ability to ideate, develop and execute projects using a high degree of technical competence. Recognized as an expert in automotive coating technology, you will utilize your project management skills, knowledge of business, and internal/external resources to independently plan and direct all aspects of your project area.  You will initiate and foster scientific exchange with technical associates both within and outside your technical areas of responsibility.

 
Responsibilities:
  • Executes projects and/or specific phases of a project on time.
  • Develops understanding of design principles and performs root cause analysis using business process improvement tools. Uses these principles to design effective experiments. Identifies and utilizes internal or external resources when applicable.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, initiative and drive through accomplished tasks. Follows through on mutually agreed upon ideas and goals.
  • Serve as liaison to Automotive OEM for details on specifications.
  • Effectively uses feedback. Accomplished in thorough, concise and timely oral and written communications. Actively contributes in a team environment.
  • Adherence to PPG Environmental, Health and Safety policies and 5S principles.
Education & Experience Necessary
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • 2+ years' experience in chemistry and scientific test methods, preferably in coatings technology
 
Functional/Technical Expertise Necessary
  • Attention to detail is critical in this role.
  • Proven organizational skills, teamwork and flexibility are critical in our work environment.
  • Sigma Logic/ DOE design understanding.
  • Performs independently by planning and executing specific phases of a project, subject to direction of a senior exempt employee.
  • Develops understanding of fundamental principles and root cause analysis.
  • Uses these principles to design experiments and BPI tools that effectively lead to problem solving.
  • Provides direct support to field technical problems; travel as needed.
