Main Activities/Duties/Responsibilities:

 

The incumbent will support the development of a variety of coating technologies (topcoats, primers, adhesives, and/or pretreatments) within the Funded Initiative Team.  Work will be performed in one of several laboratories at the Coating Innovation Center, in Allison Park, PA.  Responsibilities include conducting research, in collaboration with external funding agencies, emphasizing Business growth and long-term development of new technology.  Also, the successful candidate will have opportunities to identify and evaluate new technology through internal PPG and external collaborations, as well as literature searches, competitive analysis, and intellectual property reviews.

 

Specific tasks include the following:

  • Formulate coatings using commercially available and experimental raw materials.  Apply formulations to a variety of substrate materials using existing application techniques, and then evaluate coating performance (physical properties, corrosion resistance, etc.) according to a specified test matrix.
  • Develop and evaluate new ideas to improve coating performance, meet regulatory requirements, and/or address unmet customer or market needs.
  • Regularly document and communicate results through laboratory notebooks, periodic project reports, coatings reports, and oral presentations.
  • Network effectively, and collaborate with other PPG scientists and engineers across R&D and manufacturing, as well as external contacts in various funding agencies, academia, and industry.
  • Research scientific literature to identify solutions to customer problems, or explain observed experimental results. 
  • Maintain and operate in a safe working environment.

Experience and Education:

 

B.S. Degree in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or a similar field of study is required.  Previous academic or industrial experience in a laboratory, or previous industrial experience in product development are highly desirable.

 

Functional and Technical Skills:

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work both independently, and as part of a team.
  • Adaptability to visit regional, and external sites as needed (less than 20% travel anticipated).
  • Successful application of Sigma Logic tools.
  • Excellent experimental skills, and chemistry/materials knowledge.
  • Attention to detail.
