PPG is currently hiring for a Controls Engineer at our Circleville, Ohio plant. This position may represent a transition from individual contributor to the managerial level. Specialized in Manufacturing/Process/Design Engineering, the incumbent performs complex assignments often requiring development of new or improved products, processes, or techniques, and may assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering tests, products, and equipment. Coordinates planning, organization, and implementation of engineering projects with constraints of specific objectives and target dates as specified by management. Representative activities include: reviewing project-related documentation to ensure accuracy; participating in professional organizations to maintain current knowledge of technical innovations; assisting in determining project objectives to contribute to the development of a comprehensive project design, outlining project requirements, assigning tasks, and supervising progress to ensure that objectives are being met; providing technical direction to project team members.

The Control Engineer position requires working in a plant environment supporting and leading projects that involve chemical process control and instrumentation, including design and implementation of instrument and control projects. These projects include estimation, preparation of capital funding requests, spending management, preparation of bidding documents, specifying and procuring equipment, issuing work permits, overseeing construction and company workers.

You will be required to effectively plan and schedule work, ensuring that all specifications and schedules are known and met. Work will be done in a team environment assisting other engineers engaged in similar or different engineering disciplines. This job requires the incumbent to program programmable logic controls, variable frequency drives, motor controls, smart instruments, and other instruments connected with PLC and DCS controls of the facility.

This job also involves the general upkeep and maintenance of the control systems for eleven resin reactors and other control systems. The candidate is expected to be self-motivated in making corrections to systems and seeking new technologies and improvement plans for the controls systems advise to advise management. The successful candidate must be willing to work periods of overtime and respond to calls from the facility during breakdown times to diagnose and resolve issues.

Time will primarily be spent at the facility in an office, control center, and field.  Travel time will be mostly limited to offsite training opportunities and corporate collaborations. You will work with sound organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels of management, multiple disciplines of engineering, and production personnel, while coordinating project implementations and complying to standards and policies.
Experience and Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering preferably electrical, electronics, or chemical engineering.
  • Two (2) or more years of engineering experience, preferably in resin or chemical manufacturing.
  • Must understand accounting principles in developing requests for capital funds, establishing realistic budgets and following budgets to implement projects. 

Functional and Technical Skills

  • Have a sound working knowledge of the maintenance and engineering of instrumentation/electrical devices, programmable logic controllers (Allen Bradley), HMIs (GE), Ethernet protocols, and distributive control systems (Fischer/Emerson).
  • Have fluent computer skills with Microsoft products and AutoCAD.
  • Have analytical and problem solving skills in process control and instrumentation.
  • Read and develop P&IDs and loop (I/O) diagrams for process control documentation.
  • Good communication skills working within a team environment.
