PPG Industrial Coatings produces coatings for appliances, agricultural and construction equipment, consumer electronics, automotive parts, residential and commercial construction, wood flooring and many other finished products. The Building Products Interior and Exterior Products Technical team located at the Springdale, PA Coatings Plant provides customer and manufacturing support, along with product development efforts for the business segments that provide these products into the Extrusion, Joinery, and Interior Wood markets. The successful candidate will be on the team that specifically supports the Joinery market.

 

This position will encompass preparation and application of coatings, and testing these coatings against a wide range of specifications and customer requirements. As an experienced lab technician, incumbents are expected to operate with minimal supervision and independently plan and execute all aspects of an experiment following a discussion with the supervisor.  Incumbents will be active in problem solving and be able to efficiently meet aggressive timelines.

 

Key responsibilites:

  • Under minimal supervision, conduct experimental work such as the formulation, application and testing of coatings.
  • Aid in the analysis and interpretation of experimental results
  • Work toward technical milestones and prioritize to deliver results within agreed timelines
  • Flexibility in daily activities due to shifting priority
  • Maintain and grow an understanding of relevant formulation and applications processes, as well as evaluation of samples using established methods.
  • Maintain an organized lab notebook, organizing and communicating results to chemist/supervisor
  • Work safely, following all lab procedures and contribute to the maintenance of high safety standards.
  • Be or become familiar with SOPs and ASTMs pertaining to everyday chemicals and testing procedures.
  • Participate in all safety protocols and 5S initiatives and help to maintain the laboratory equipment and inventories
  • Keep a clean work environment, to include the execution of routine upkeep activities in support of the entire lab

 

 

Minimum Qualification Requirements


  • 4-6 years lab experience OR 2-4 years of lab experience plus 2 years college training in math/science or applicable associate’s degree
  • A High School diploma or GED is required
  • Strong math skills and high school chemistry is preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret complex customer specifications
  • Computer skills including Word and Excel are required
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and well with others
  • Previous work in a coatings laboratory environment preferred
