The Lead Chemist contributes to the profit objectives of the automotive coatings by assisting in the development and testing of new products that reflect PPG’s quality and meet customer requirements. The Lead Chemist will support product development via preparing laboratory samples, carrying out design of experiments (DOE) studies, application testing and performance testing. The Lead Chemist will provide the overall direction and help set priorities for the team associates.

 

Additional Responsibilities Include:

  • Formulate, develop for color, file, correlate, and service a variety of technologies using instrumentation methodologies that align with customer requirements.
  • Create design of experiment studies to conduct, analyze and to provide realistic line condition and workability recommendations based on customer site visits.
  • Work directly with customer designers to achieve novel color spaces. Make technical reports and present directly to the customer for their approval.
  • Implement formula improvements and conduct root cause analysis to adjust formulas based on batch history to minimize cycle time and improve quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide direction to multiple departments regarding process, technology capabilities, product preparation, and application. Train new chemists and team members. Take on additional responsibility where needed to support valued company initiatives.

Education & Experience Necessary

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in a Science discipline, preferably a Chemistry Degree with experience in a Technical or Quality Control lab environment.
 

Functional/Technical Expertise Necessary

  • Follow experimental procedures, generate reliable data, and consistently demonstrates the ability to contribute to the design of experiments.
  • Lead independent projects or portions of larger project.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and conducts technical studies with only general direction from a group or project leader.
  • Takes responsibility for actions.
  • Effectively communicates both orally and in writing within the work team.
