As a LIMS Business Analyst you will work in the Science & Technology function and be located in the Pittsburgh region!  The candidate will be a member of the LabVantage Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) implementation project team. In this role, he or she will partner with the S&T Research and Product Development labs to clarify and communicate business requirements, identify and implement future state process improvements, and support LIMS stream leads on the successful delivery of the three streams – Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN), Analytical Management System (AMS) and Chemical Inventory Management (CIM) of the LabVantage LIMS project. As a LIMS Business Analyst, this individual:

  • Assist with deployment of a functional LIMS (ELN, AMS, and CIM) with limited to no customizations
  • Assist stream leads with collection, organization, validation of accuracy and documentation of master data
  • Perform master data import and additional master data entry within LabVantage for ELN, AMS and CIM.
  • Assist with integrating and validating critical analytical instruments with AMS system
  • Assist with integrating and validating other systems (ERP, GPS, etc) with LIMS system
  • Assist with report writing for analytical reports, ELN reports, and CIM compliance reports
  • Assist with creating SOP and job aid documents for future ELN, AMS and CIM workflows
  • Assist with creating user acceptance and stress testing scripts
  • Assist with cutover plan
  • Be adept at assessing people, process, and technology dimensions of the laboratory workflow processes.
  • Will be a functional expert in one or more of the following areas: laboratory notebook policies, intellectual property (IP), export control, analytical techniques, analytical workflows, EH&S policies, chemical hazards, chemical tracking in research and analytical areas, and chemical reporting for compliance.
  • Will be responsible for following PPG’s IT project methodology.

Science & Technology is a global function comprised Research and Product Development labs.  The incumbent will support projects at S&T lab locations including:

  • North America:  Allison Park, Monroeville, Harmar, Springdale, Burbank
  • Europe:  Marly, Milan, Ingersheim, Amsterdam, Wroclaw
  • Asia Pacific:  Tianjin

The candidate must be willing to travel 10-20%, depending on project requirements.


The LIMS Business Analyst will assist in providing support to the S&T labs and LIMS stream leads, leveraging prior experience within the business or in IT.  They conduct and analyze business and information technology processes and prepare groundwork which allows the identification of potential solutions, evolution of possible business process and application changes. Incumbents in this position develop and maintain credibility and effective working relations with both subject matter experts, LIMS stream leads and IT personnel in a way that demonstrates an understanding of business problems. They ally with other LIMS Business Analyst to remain apprised of project status and risks.  Incumbents facilitate development of cross-SBU solutions and LIMS modules through their knowl­edge of research and development laboratories and promote process standardization. They also assist with master data imports, legacy data migration, system iteration validation, user acceptance testing, and documenting and tracking issues through resolution.


The LIMS Business Analyst participates in the definition, testing, training, implementation, and support of business solutions. They identify customer requirements, develop test schedules, review testing plans, and track and document the development and results of these plans. They also can develop or maintain alternative technical solutions using various tools. They consult with other technical analysts to comply with PPG and industry standards and they document the results of analysis activities using the appropriate templates or analysis tools Knowledge of laboratory notebook polices, intellectual property (IP), export control, analytical techniques, EH&S polices, and chemical tracking workflows. Knowledge of current solutions, including PatentSafe, SampleManager, and ChemSearch, is a plus.  Incumbents alert project managers and LIMS stream leads, and advise on options to potential risks and issues of importance. They uncover client requirements via industry standard analysis techniques such as data flow modeling, workflow analysis, and process mapping.


LIMS Business Analyst needs to develop an understanding of the LabVantage solution and the business area they serve. They need to demonstrate strong teamwork and interpersonal skills and be able to establish effective working relationships with LIMS team personnel and the customer base.

They should demonstrate the ability to produce agreed upon results without close supervision and develop and maintain relationships with vendors, consultants or contractors, and professional organizations to maintain professional and technical knowledge of software and systems.  Other key attributes is the ability to demonstrate strong oral and written communication skill.

  • A 4-year degree in Chemistry, EHS, Computer Science or related science field is required
  • Typically requires 3+ years in experience in area of functional expertise.
  • IT experience, is a plus
  • Ability to rapidly assimilate assigned business area's products and processes
  • Knowledge and experience in gathering requirements, functional design, and working with business processes
  • Understanding of how software solutions affects an organization and ability to link it to redesigned business processes
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills
  • Must have a strong systems and process orientation
