PPG is currently in search of a Quality Assurance Manager to join our Architectural Coatings business. This role will support our Vaughan Plant in Concord, Ontario.

Job Summary:

The Quality Assurance Manager will interface with the Site Operations Manager and the entire site Management Team. They will work directly with production supervisors and operators during quality system development and audits. He/she will also work with central Quality Systems and the QA network to develop standardized practices, procedures and improvement opportunities for PPG NA. Finally the QA Manager will liaison with the external certifying body for external audits. All of these actions directly affect the movement of products from the Vaughan site into the PPG NA supply chain. 

Job Responsibilities:
  • Ensure daily schedule requirements are achieved through the support of the Quality Group’s team’s work tasks.
  • Work with Front Line Management to ensure business needs are met through the sharing of knowledge and resources as required.
  • Training new and current employees to new and existing processes
  • Auditing processes and tasks for compliance and continuous improvement opportunities.
Quality Management System:
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the NA PPG QMS at the local plant level plus the other two CDN sites.
  • Work with all of the functional areas within the plant to ensure all aspects of the NA PPG QMS are understood and being followed as specified.
  • Ensure all of the required QMS documentation is maintained and controlled within the site and corporate document control system(s).
Direction of Quality Group Staff:
  • Establish and monitor the required workflow and yearly goals for the six QC Group members.
  • Maintain their HR requirements e.g. PLP's, timesheets, benefit needs, personal issues, etc.
Corrective Action Reporting:
  • Facilitate compliance with the Corrective Action Reporting, i.e. the Internal, Customer and Supplier at the local and corporate levels.
  • Ensure all management levels at the local level are trained and/or understand the requirements of the various ICAR, CCAR and CAIR systems.

Voice of the Customer and Non-Conforming Materials:

  • Ensure that all complaints (both internal and external) are facilitated through the site in a complete and timely manner. 
  • Provide support and training on the use of the complaint database system at the site level.
  • Track and provide frequent updates to the site leadership team the relevant metrics surrounding Voice of the Customer (VOC). 
  • Ensure that “top” quality concerns are being address in the proper manner to help prevent further reoccurrence.
  • Ensure / Facilitate the process that identifies and controls products and raw materials that do not conform to specifications are identified to prevent unintended use or delivery.
  • Work with site and corporate specific groups to ensure all non-conforming materials are recovered in a timely manner without risking further quality problems.
  • Ensure that all non-conformance incidents are properly reported in the correct corrective action database with properly identified root cause and effective preventive actions are implemented (see Corrective Action reports above).
Quality Training and Awareness:
  • Ensure that site management understands the role and expectations of the Quality Assurance Manager but also their roles in production and shipment of quality coatings.
  • Facilitate with the site management team specifically directed departmental quality discussions to ensure the link between the Customer - Consumer satisfaction and quality are understood.
Quality Audits (Internal and External):
  • Identify and agree on the resources required for internal auditing of the sites compliance to and improvement of the QMS. 
  • Ensure that the site audit team is properly qualified, with procedures and tools to perform internal audits. 
  • Create and manage the internal audit schedule. 
  • Facilitate corrective actions related to the internal audit findings. 
  • Facilitate and Manage site activates for external audits by quality certification bodies. 
  • When so requested to participate in and help manage external audits of contract manufactures, supplies and any other external companies that provide goods / services to PPG NA / Global.    
  • Escalate manufacturing related issues to the appropriate support groups (QA, Process, Maintenance, Operations) and help in the resolution using the 5 why analysis
  • Recommend and actively support the implementation of process improvement opportunities
  • Assist in incident investigations and root cause analysis of FRB batches 
  • Actively seeks and accepts positive and constructive feedback from colleagues and leadership
  • Communicate daily with team performance vs. target and conduct gap analysis
  • Work with team members to identify areas of opportunity (gap analysis) and with the support of management to develop realistic plans to achieve improvement
  • Works effectively with team members in support of team and department goals 
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and written
  • Perform any related duties as assigned
  • Actively contributes in team meetings and other team-related activities 

  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years Quality experience is a preferred
  • Ability to lead and manage teams through influence
  • Coatings experience is desirable
  • Confident and influential communicator
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Team focused
  • Sense of urgency, respect, and integrity for self and team
  • Ability to manage through difficult and challenging situations, problem solve, and perform root cause analysis
