The Research Associate will be responsible for providing assistance to resin manufacturing plants to help drive cycle time and resin plant efficiency projects and with the Polymer Synthesis Group to commercialize new products at the Development Center. 

  • Skill in resin chemistry, safety, processing, and sigma logic will be developed. These skills will be leveraged to supplement the manufacturing plants’ resources to accelerate projects. They will utilize the expertise at the Polymer Synthesis Group, the Development Engineers at the Springdale DC as well as the scale-up capabilities at the Resin Process lab at Springdale R&D to achieve the improvements. 
  • A close relationship will be developed with the business units to ensure changes are fully vetted for quality and product end performance characteristics before being implemented. 
  • Some improvements may be the identification of technology and procedures not currently utilized by PPG – experimentation and piloting may be needed to understand and confirm the benefits. 
  • Projects may be one day to several months long depending on the request. Some projects may be hands-on with pilot plant/glassware equipment. 
  • The individual will need to be able to multitask and organize their day to day activities with the project target dates in mind.
  • The application of basic engineering, resin chemistry, troubleshooting and mechanical skills will be needed for problem solving tasks. In many cases hypotheses will need to be confirmed with an appropriately structured experiment. 
  • The understanding of basic process safety management (PSM) concepts will be needed to ensure experiments are vetted and equipment is set up properly.
  • Work will be completed in both a team environment and as an individual contributor.  
  • Some travel may be required to other PPG or supplier locations

  • BS/MS in Chemical Engineering is required. 
  • 1-3 Years of industry experience is required.
  • Time will be split between an office, lab and plant environments. Hands-on work will be required for RM handling, sample generation and testing. Some evening/night time hours may be required infrequently to watch production batches. Appropriate PPE will be required including safety glasses, safety shoes, respirator, hardhat, gloves and lab coat/uniform.
  • Systematically develops and evaluates alternatives and selects a course of action
  • Uses a disciplined process (e.g. the PPG Problem Solving Process) to ensure solutions address the root causes of problems
  • Takes preventive action to head off anticipated problems
  • Must have excellent problems solving and communications skills. Interactions will be across many different organizational levels.
  •  Strong computer, chemistry and mechanical skills are desired.
