This role will support OMC Research and Development (R&D) activities through hands-on laboratory experimentation for the development and commercialization of new optical materials. He/she will act as the project leader on development efforts utilizing experience or the best technology available from any source. He/she must be a competent professional, capable of handling complex technical problems and projects requiring unique solutions. He/she works effectively and communicates clearly with R&D, the PPG commercial team, and customers. The role will ensure the timely technology transfer from R&D facilities to plant sites worldwide. As liaison, he/she takes responsibility for managing these groups and champions specific projects.

The Research Associate will be involved with planning, directing, coordinating, and conducting the experimental work necessary to meet project goals and timelines in developing new products or providing technical support for commercial products. He/she may initiate and propose new projects as well as conceive and develop theories through application of advanced specialized scientific knowledge.
 
The Associate must be able to search and interpret literature as well as be cognizant of competitor technology and intellectual property; this includes identifying new technology and patent opportunities through literature searches, technical scouting, competitive analysis and patent landscape reviews.

Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Solving technical problems through the application of appropriate scientific, experimental, and statistical methods. 
  • Applying fundamental chemistry knowledge and conducting laboratory work to accelerate new product development and introduction to customers, including formulation and testing of new optical materials.
  • Leading a team focused on product optimization, process development, and qualification testing for prospective customers.

  •  Education and experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a relevant technical field, such as Physics, Materials Science or Polymer Science with 15+ years of relevant industrial experience.
    • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a relevant technical field, such as Physics, Materials Science or Polymer Science with 10+ years of relevant industrial experience.
    • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a relevant technical field, such as Physics, Materials Science or Polymer Science with 7+ years of relevant industrial experience.
    • Compelling combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and versatility.
  • Organizational skills related to project management and/or supervising personnel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including customer-facing exposure and ability to convey technical understanding to international audiences.
  • Proven ability to conduct innovative and independent research that results in patents.
  • Experience documenting and communicating research findings and/or performance testing results via detailed technical reports and publications.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team in a complex, fast-changing, deadline-driven environment.
  • Successful track record of applying statistical tools for DOE and data analysis.
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to 10% is required.
