The Research Chemist Engineer for the silica battery applications research role will quickly develop a complete understanding of PPG silica technologies and use in battery and in other applications and then leverages these for innovation.  Innovations in this segment are customer driven and involve all aspects of product lifecycle (concept development, product management, and manufacturing)--focused on practical solutions that address customer concerns such as battery separator extrusion process, separator electrical resistance (ER) and physical properties of battery separator membranes, all of which are influenced in part by the silica.

The researcher’s greatest skill is having the ability to formulate concepts whether novel or not, reduce them quickly to practice, then effectively communicate the value proposition to the internal team launching the product, and externally to customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and develop complete understanding of PPG silica products and their use in battery separator applications within the first six months.  This involves proactively reaching out to the researchers in the silica R&D team, the segment manager, and the sales force and customer base to understand the silica design principles, manufacturing processes, and key drivers behind the use of silica in microporous battery applications.  This knowledge becomes the basis for generating innovative ideas that address market unmet needs that can be vetted and approved for further development.

  • Develop new products and prepare for launch.  The silica business seeks to strengthen and maintain its technology leadership position in microporous battery separator applications.  The chemist will need to accelerate the pace of new product (NP) development by validating current and new concepts and deliver NPs to market within the first two years.

  • Project Management The researcher will be the key technical leader in product development efforts in support of segment sales growth and will work with the team to manage project lifecycle in a stage gate process and improve the results from the segment portfolio pipeline by at least 20% within two years of employment.

  • Plan and conduct experiments:  The researcher will lead the planning and execution of experiments, working with a multifunctional team to advance initiatives for use of silica in non-rubber applications, in particular microporous battery separator applications.

  • Present research findings and the value proposition of new products both internally and externally: Effective researcher in this role must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, translating scientific findings to bottom line actionable business impacts for a variety of audiences including managerial and leadership audiences.

Additionally, the researcher will work closely with the segment manager and sales team to clearly communicate the value of PPG silica products in microporous battery separator applications.  This will involve interfacing with customers and suppliers including being the PPG technical representative in international and domestic conferences.

#LI-ES1
  • A Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Material Science, Polymer Science or Physics or related fields.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with a record of successful innovation and commercialization of new products in membrane applications, sol-gel chemistry, or other relevant experience with material processing.
  • Experience in designing and commercializing inorganic fillers would be helpful.
  • The ability to work and document a project from screening through the commercialization pipeline is essential.
  • A high degree of professionalism, excellent communication and presentation skills is very important.
  • Must have the ability to lead and work with minimal direction.
  • Creative problem solving and the ability to rapidly introduce change and promote new ways of doing things are essential.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders that includes Research and Development, Sales & Marketing, Business Leaders and Customers is very important.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of internet is important.
