Summary:

The Senior Adhesives & Sealant Chemist works collaboratively with Sales, Marketing, and other members of Technical Department.  The Chemist is responsible for the development of new products for adhesives and sealants, predominately for the Automotive aftermarket industry also product improvements on existing product portfolio.

 

This position may manage other junior chemists or technicians but also could be a stand-alone position. The role will entail research and development through to scale up and require previous experience in formulating, testing, reporting of results, and customer interaction. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated.  A knowledge of Automotive aftermarket industry pertaining to products and use is preferred.

 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop new products based upon the needs of the Sales and Marketing teams. These will be suggestions internally or externally and require collaboration to set realistic specs and goals for the product based upon product need, sales demand and customer expectations and the chemists’ knowledge of what can be achieved.
  • Have a good knowledge of the chemistry involved with adhesives, 1K seam sealers and 2 component adhesives. 2K Urethane, 2K epoxy systems as well as moisture cured silanes and some knowledge of acrylates.
  • Carry out development and testing  of products in a timely manner and report results at regular meetings, a knowledge of common adhesive testing methods would be beneficial such as lap shear, wedge impact, peel tests, appearance, chip testing, cyclic corrosion testing, subjective application testing, sanding viscosity and dry time/cure profiles.
  • An understanding of the industry need such as application methods, equipment and regulatory would be an advantage.
  • The role may require some travel to customers for specific requirements/trouble shooting but not regularly and also to attend relevant courses conferences and trade shows as applicable.
  • Possibly manage up to 3 junior staff as the role demands,  manage their time and projects provide assessments and reviews as required although at times it could be a stand-alone role.
  • Provide technical direction and expertise internally, in the field, to the other parts of the business, be required to interact with other SBU’s as required.
  • Liaise with suppliers and suggest routes forward and ideas for new products based upon new innovations or raw materials in the industry.
  • Work with production on scale up and sales and marketing for field trials of new products as they near launch.
 

Additional Activities:

  • Prepares reports organizes meetings and reviews internal technical papers.
  • Reviews technical publications, articles and abstracts to stay abreast of technical developments in the industry.
  • Ensures that materials and work area are kept organized.
  • Complies with all company policies and procedures.  Performs duties in compliance with safety policies, procedures and programs.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude towards the company, management, other employees and customers.  Participates in assigned activities, assignments and projects to further elevate the company team spirit.  Assists and supports others in the achievement of company or departmental goals.
Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience is required.
  • Five (5) or more years of related experience is required.
  • Previous experience in automotive aftermarket is preferred.
 

Functional & Technical Skills:

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Reads, analyzes, and interprets scientific and technical journals. Responds to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.  Writes speeches and articles for publication that conform to SEM style and format.  Effectively presents information to top management, public groups and/or board of Directors.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Applies principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Deals with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs) in its most difficult phases and with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • OTHER SKILLS: Is detail oriented. Is proficient in job-related/specific software, (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, etc.)
