The Consulting family forms part of the Business/Function Consulting track within the IT function. It contains positions whose primary role is to partner with business units or functional groups to clarify and communicate business requirements, assuring products and services are aligned with business needs. Incumbents become business or function specialists and can be technology generalists or specialists, providing an array of services such as business process improvement, priority-setting facilitation, project definition or design, and broker IT and contract services.

Business

Expert IT Business Analysts provide consulting services to assigned customers in the definition and design of business processes and projects. These analysts participate in the definition of specific IT projects to support business/function plans and processes. This includes research and identification of enabling technologies based on customer requirements. 

 

Incumbents in this position are challenged to develop and maintain credibility and effective working relations with both customer management and IT personnel in a way that demonstrates an understanding of business problems, as well as IT strategies, issues, and priorities. They interact with other IT functional areas to remain apprised of project status and inform customer management of progress; conversely, they also keep the IT group's technology and service managers aware of current or future user issues. Incumbents facilitate development of business solutions that combine knowl­edge of particular business processes and issues, general or specific technological options, and process facilitation techniques.  Additionally, these analysts maintain awareness of technology trends across industries in specific functional disciplines.  They use this knowledge to identify innovative solution alternatives for business opportunities.

 

Based on knowledge of assigned customer businesses/functions, incumbents are responsible for identifying opportunities to apply technologies to business processes. They inform and advise customers on information system technol­ogies' functionality, costs, benefits, and implementation requirements. Expert IT Business Analysts facilitate the development of SBU/functional solutions that combine knowledge of particular business processes and issues, general technological options, and process facilitation techniques. They may provide services such as facilitating priority setting and working with vendors on behalf of customers by identifying requirements and brokering agreements.

 
Technical

Expert IT Business Analysts may be required to manage projects and be responsible for the overall implementation and execution of project and performance criteria, maintaining knowledge of all phases of business­ specific technology implementations. Incumbents actively seek ways to apply technology to business processes, researching and providing information on technical trends and competitors' practices relevant to the assigned business or function. They assess near-term needs, using structured interview processes to establish business priorities; consult with technical subject matter experts (such as Systems Consultants, IT Managers, Expert Systems Analysts and other Consultants) and develop alternative technical solutions. Expert IT Business Analysts learn to advise on options, risks, costs versus benefits, and impact on other business processes and system priorities. 

 
Interpersonal

Expert IT Business Analysts may be called upon to broker services within the IT community on behalf of customers. They coordinate solutions and clarify interdependencies so that systems appear seamless to customers. Incumbents must forge relationships within the business or function that they serve as well as maintain rapport with other IT groups. Negotiation, influencing and getting to consensus are key attributes of the successful Analyst.

 

Incumbents develop and maintain credibility and effective working relations with both customer management and IT personnel.  Additionally, they may need to develop, motivate, and direct staff to create a team environment and enable staff to fulfill the department's operating objectives.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Partnering with business resources to document business requirements and processes and translating them into meaningful information for technical development teams
  • Partnering and collaborating with internal PPG IT teams as well as third parties to identify and deliver solutions desired by the Automotive OEM Coatings business
  • Participating in projects to ensure business requirements are met at project completion
  • Assisting with the prioritization of projects for the Automotive OEM Coatings business
  • Ensuring the appropriate IT teams are aware of upcoming projects and engaged early in the planning process
  • Leading and participating in requirements gathering and design work sessions
  • Collaborating effectively within a global cross-functional team to achieve goals
  • Contributing to testing activities, including developing  testing strategies, defining test templates, executing test scripts, reporting test results, and managing any necessary remediation
  • Contributing to strategy for and transition to production support for newly developed applications/enhancements of existing solutions
  • Delivering documentation and deliverables in alignment with methodologies and best practices

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • A 4-year degree in an IT related field, business, or equivalent work experience is required; an MBA is desired
  • Typically requires 7+ years of experience in IT, business process, or consulting roles with a track record of successful project implementations

Preferred Requirements:


Knowledge of practices, policies, and procedures in their area.  Varied Responsibilities with moderately complex problem solving, independent analysis, and decision making skills

  • Experience in the use of technology in managing a business/function process
  • Understanding of how IT affects an organization and ability to link it to redesigned business processes
  • Previous experience in business process re-engineering or process improvement is desirable, involving broad based information systems and utilizing tools and techniques to effect business change
  • Strong analytical abilities and skills to evaluate alternative approaches and to recommend the most feasible and economical solutions
  • Solid technical knowledge and ability to express complex technical concepts in terms that are understandable to the business
  • Track record of participation on multidiscipline, high-performance work teams/groups
  • Demonstrated competency in project management methodologies and practices
  • Ability to solve problems spanning multiple environments in a business area
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all management levels
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to be comfortable in a nonhierarchical, flat organization and, if required, operate under a dual reporting relationship; ability to thrive in a somewhat unstructured hands­-on environment that demands a consultative approach and solutions that span multiple environments in a business area
