The successful candidate will enable fundamental optical capability development by actively participating as a member of the Optical Physics Team. The goal of this position is to identify, develop and promote new technologies and theories that will create a competitive advantage and differentiation for PPG. The successful candidate will understand the chemical and material properties of coatings in the liquid state, during application, in the cured state. This knowledge will be connected with optical measurement techniques across the electromagnetic spectrum, in order to drive toward fundamental knowledge, capability, and tools that the impact the formulation and/or application on the final color, appearance, and functional properties of the coating. The successful candidate will communicate at both a highly technical and business level, in order to support new technologies to the correct SBU key stakeholders for test drill and implementation. The successful candidate will also support interaction with key suppliers, universities, and other relevant third parties in order to help advance the strategic goals of the group.

Principle Accountabilities:
  • Research and develop optical mathematics and algorithms for coatings formulation for solid color, effect color, and functional coatings.

  • Research and develop new optical measurement and test processes for optical property assessment

  • Work in partnerships with equipment vendors and universities to develop and test new technology.

  • Interact with SBU technical, operations, and/or marketing personnel on various projects.

Experience and Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Optics/Photonics

  • Moderate understanding of programming and databases

  • Solid understanding of color theory and relevant light physics

Functional and Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in data analysis, Six Sigma/statistics experience

  • Thorough understanding of coatings technologies, including dispersable and flake pigments

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD preferred or B.S. science degree with 10+ years’ experience with coatings formulation, color matching, and/or analytical techniques
