This role is responsible for assisting a laboratory that supports the industrial coatings segment.  This will encompass preparation and application of coatings, and testing these coatings against a wide range of specifications and customer requirements. As a highly experienced Application Technician, incumbents are expected to set work direction independently based on priorities and conduct meaningful studies with limited direction. The Incumbents are also expected to contribute to discussions of project plans and milestones with influencing and supporting project decisions.
 
Key functions & accountabilities:
  • Under minimal supervision, conduct experimental work such as the formulation, application and testing of coatings.
  • Aid in the analysis and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Work toward technical milestones and prioritize to deliver results within agreed timelines.
  • Flexibility in daily activities due to shifting priority.
  • Maintain and grow an understanding of relevant formulation and applications processes, as well as evaluation of samples using established methods.
  • Maintain an organized data entry template, organizing and communicating results to supervisor.
  • Work safely, following all lab procedures and contribute to the maintenance of high safety standards.
  • Be or become familiar with SOPs and ASTMs pertaining to everyday chemicals and testing procedures.
  • Participate in all safety protocols and 5S initiatives and help to maintain the laboratory equipment and inventories.
  • Ability to use, disassemble, repair, and reassemble complex application equipment.
  • Utilize learned Sigma Logic tools.
  • Ability in writing clear and concise lab reports.
  • Conduct project conversations with Technical Service Representatives, Sales, and Customers.
  • Keep a clean work environment, to include the execution of routine upkeep activities in support of the entire lab.
Experience and Education
  • High school diploma is required
  • 1 year or more of experience in a technical or quality control lab with knowledge of liquid coatings and ability to compare wet and dry paint appearance and properties
  • Understanding, experience, and ability to work with a range of coating technologies
  • Ability to understand, record, and verbalize detailed information accurately in order to provide application test reports;
  • Excellent attendance as well as the ability to work independently and extended hours/weekends when needed
